Understanding Your Ideal Weight: Formulas Explained

This calculator provides ideal weight estimations based on several widely recognized formulas and the healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) range. It’s important to understand that these formulas offer guidelines, and individual ideal weight can vary based on factors like body composition, muscle mass, and overall health. Always consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.

Here’s a breakdown of the formulas used:

1. Robinson Formula (1983)

The Robinson formula is a modification of the Devine formula, aiming for improved accuracy.

  • For Men: 52 kg+1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • For Women: 49 kg+1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet

2. Miller Formula (1983)

The Miller formula is another modification of the Devine formula, also published in 1983.

  • For Men: 56.2 kg+1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • For Women: 53.1 kg+1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet

3. Devine Formula (1974)

The Devine formula is one of the most commonly used methods for estimating ideal body weight, originally developed for drug dosage calculations.

  • For Men: 50.0 kg+2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • For Women: 45.5 kg+2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet

4. Hamwi Formula (1964)

The Hamwi formula is one of the oldest and simplest methods for calculating ideal body weight.

  • For Men: 48.0 kg+2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet
  • For Women: 45.5 kg+2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet

5. Healthy BMI Range

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. While not an “ideal weight” formula in itself, it provides a healthy weight range based on a universally accepted classification.

  • BMI Calculation: BMI=height (m)2weight (kg)
  • Healthy BMI Range: A healthy BMI is generally considered to be between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2. Our calculator translates this range back into a healthy weight range for your given height.

Important Note: These formulas are based on averages and may not perfectly reflect every individual’s ideal weight. Factors like muscle mass (which weighs more than fat), bone density, and body frame size are not directly accounted for in these simple formulas. For a comprehensive assessment, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional.
